Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop is Australia’s first canonised Saint. While a laywoman she became a teacher, but eventually began to yearn for a strictly penitential form of religious life. Her spiritual director Fr Tenison-Woods established the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, to which she was the first member and Superior. They were to live in poverty, trusting in God’s Providence, and dedicate themselves to educating poor children. She faced many struggles in getting her schools running but persevered in her trials. She is a great model for us and a wonderful reminder that we too can become saints. At this Solemn High Mass we invite the clergy of the diocese and encourage all people to join us in praising God for Australia’s Saint and asking for her intercession.
