The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Holy Day of Obligation.
On this feast we celebrate how Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heaven.
“On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. Moreover, they are to abstain from those works and affairs which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body.” (CIC, 1247). In Australia, only two Holy Days of Obligation are observed out of the ten observed by the universal Church, the Assumption and Christmas.
Let us make use of this opportunity to celebrate this feast and ensure that as well as attending Mass, we make something special of this day.
