Musical Oratory – Haydn

Joseph Haydn considered his Seven Last Words one of his highest achievements. Originally commissioned for a church in the Spanish city of Cádiz to be staged on Good Friday. It consists of seven musical meditations on the final words of Christ spoken from the Cross.
The work was originally interspersed with reflections. In imitation of this, the movements will be preceded by brief reflections from St Bonaventure on the meaning of the words.
